Tethering with Samsung Omnia 7 on Vodafone (NL)

Written by Tom Verhoeff on. Posted in WP7

The first rumours about tethering on the Samsung Omnia 7 and other WP7 devices started showing up a few months ago already. Since i love tethering for those few moments a really need an internet connection on my laptop, but don’t have wifi or my internet dongle around i decided to give it a shot with my Omnia 7. It requires a bigger effort than internet sharing back in the days with WM6.5, but I’m happy it works anyway. Here’s what you need to do:
  1. Get the Samsung Mobile Modem drivers (for example here) and install them on your computer.
  2. On the phone, dial ##634# and hit call. Another (different) dialer shows up. (If it does not work the first time, try dialing ##634# again)
  3. In the new dialer enter *#7284#, a 3-choice menu should show up.
  4. To enable tethering, choose the 2nd option. You will have to reboot your phone to apply the new setting.
  5. After reboot, connect the phone to your computer via USB. A Samsung USB Modem should be detected.

The Omnia 7 is now ready for tethering, exact setting differ per carrier so some of the next steps only apply to Vodafone. I’m also assuming you are using Windows 7, but instructions are alike on other windows versions.

  1. Open up the “Network and Sharing Center”.
  2. Set-up a new connection and choose dial-up connection.
  3. If your Omnia 7 is connected correctly you should be able to choose “Samsung Modem”.
  4. For Vodafone the required dialing number is *99#.
  5. For both username and password enter: vodafone
  6. You should now be able to connect!
  7. Using tethering temporarily disables Zune syncing. To go back to Zune syncing mode repeat above steps 2 and 3 and choose Zune sync (1st option).

This method works with my Samsung Omnia 7, but might also work with other WP7 phones. Also this should work with other carriers, although the required settings will differ. Let me know in the comments if you managed to get this to work on other phones/carriers and what settings you used. Happy tethering!

    Nice article!

As an addendum: After you have dialed ##634# for the first time, a new app is shown in your application list: Diagnosis. This app launches the dialer from where you can dial *#7284#. So you only need to memorize one code to switch between tethering and Zune sync 😉

For T-Mobile NL users, after preparing your device:
Connect your Samsung Focus to your PC, then go to Control Panel, then Device Manager (or in the start menu search box type: “device manager”. Expand the “Modems” section and you should see a: “SAMSUNG Mobile Modem” if the drivers were installed properly.
Double click to open modem properties. Go to the Advanced tab, and in the Extra Initialization Commands, enter:
    +cgdcont=1,”IP”,”internet”

Then continue this manual and use:
    dialing number:
    *99***1#
    username:
    tmobile
    password:
    tmobile

Most excellent! Ruben’s info for T-Mobile works as long as you use standard parenthesis (” instead of ”) in the extra initialization command:

    +cgdcont=1,”IP”,”internet”

Maybe the blog software changed these parenthesis, so if you’re getting error 628, 691, etc double check these settings and enter the parenthesis manually instead of copying and pasting this line.

This works on Voadfone New Zealand, but one cannot connect to the 3G network this way, it only connects to the crappy GPRS WAP network, does ANYBODY know a work around to this? I.e. accessing it via the APN settings for 3G??

I think Roth and I sing out of the D’s of dieting on adderall xr. One factor is that different people have different biological” set points” and their bodies’ metabolism
